Tesla repair costs range from $0 for software resets to $12,000–$20,000 for an out-of-warranty high-voltage battery, but most common Tesla repairs cost $100 to $2,500, and an independent shop is typically 30–80% cheaper than Tesla Service. The biggest savings come from repairs where Tesla replaces a full assembly and an independent shop repairs the failed part.

The tables below collect typical 2026 US prices from our repair guides, grouped by Model 3 and Model Y, Model S and Model X, and Cybertruck. Each row links to the full guide with symptoms, tools and step-by-step instructions. Prices are estimates; quotes vary by region and parts availability.

## In short

- Most common Tesla repairs cost $100–$2,500 at Tesla Service and less at independent shops.
- Assembly-vs-part repairs save the most: a Model S door handle is $450–$700 at Tesla vs $25–$45 for a DIY gear kit.
- Many Cybertruck issues in 2026 are handled through free recalls and campaigns.
- High-voltage battery, drive unit, PCS and A/C refrigerant work are never DIY.
- The 8-year battery and drive unit warranty covers the most expensive failures.

## Model 3 and Model Y repair costs

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y share most of their parts, so their common repairs and prices are nearly identical. Suspension squeaks, 12V batteries, A/C smell and heat pump faults are the repairs owners report most often. More model detail is on the [Model 3](https://evfixguide.com/models/model-3) and [Model Y](https://evfixguide.com/models/model-y) pages.

Typical 2026 US prices from our repair guides. Quotes vary by region.

## Model S and Model X repair costs

The Tesla Model S and Model X have the highest repair costs in the lineup, mostly because of air suspension, presenting door handles and the original MCU1 touchscreen computer on older cars. These are also the repairs where independent specialists save the most. See the Model S and Model X pages for year-by-year issues.

| Repair | Tesla Service | Independent shop | DIY |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Air suspension strut (each) | $1,200–$2,500 | $700–$1,400 | Not recommended |
| Presenting door handle | $450–$700 | $100–$180 | $25–$45 (gear kit) |
| MCU1 eMMC black screen | $1,600–$2,500 (MCU2 upgrade) | $250–$450 | $90–$150 |

| Adaptive damper (each) | $800–$2,000 | $500–$1,400 | Not recommended |
| Heat pump (newer cars) | $1,300–$2,200 | $500–$950 | Not recommended |

Typical 2026 US prices from our repair guides. Quotes vary by region.

## Cybertruck repair costs

Most Tesla Cybertruck issues reported so far are covered by recalls, service campaigns or the warranty, because the truck is still new. The exceptions are wear items and owner-caused damage. More on the Cybertruck page.

| Repair | Tesla Service | Independent shop | DIY |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cantrail trim delamination | $0 (recall / warranty) | $50–$100 | $15–$25 |
| Wiper motor stall | $0 under warranty, about $350 out of warranty | $80–$150 | $20–$40 |
| Accelerator pedal cover | $0 (safety campaign) | $0 | $0 |
| Camera fogging | $250–$450 | $50–$90 | $0–$15 |
| TPMS sensor (each) | $100–$250 | $60–$150 | $0–$20 |

Typical 2026 US prices from our repair guides. Recall status changes; check the Tesla app or NHTSA for your VIN.

## High-cost Tesla repairs on every model

A handful of repairs can reach four or five figures on any Tesla. Most are covered by the 8-year Battery and Drive Unit warranty when they fail inside its terms, which is why the warranty matters more than any other cost factor.

| Repair | Tesla Service | Independent shop | Warranty note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| High-voltage battery pack | $12,000–$20,000 | $2,500–$7,000 (module repair) | Battery warranty: 8 years |
| Front drive unit | $3,000–$7,000 | $1,500–$4,000 | Drive unit warranty: 8 years |
| PCS / DC-DC converter | $1,500–$3,000 | $800–$2,000 | Basic warranty only |
| Onboard charger (PCS) | $1,500–$3,000 | $900–$2,000 | Basic warranty only |
| Isolation fault component repair | $300–$3,000 | $300–$2,500 | Depends on the failed part |

Out-of-warranty 2026 US estimates. High-voltage work is never DIY.

**Safety:** Orange cables and high-voltage components carry roughly 350–800 volts. Battery, drive unit, PCS and pyro-fuse work belongs with Tesla or a trained EV technician.

## What makes the same Tesla repair cost more or less?

The same Tesla repair can vary by several hundred dollars depending on where and how it is done. These factors explain most of the spread in the tables above:

- Assembly vs component: replacing a whole part is faster and more expensive than repairing the failed piece inside it.
- Labor rates: shop rates in large US cities are typically higher than in smaller towns.
- Parts source: genuine Tesla parts, aftermarket parts and remanufactured parts carry different prices and warranties.
- Diagnosis time: an intermittent fault takes longer to find. Bringing the alert codes and a description of when the problem happens saves money.
- Mobile vs shop: Tesla Mobile Service can handle many jobs at home, which saves time but does not always change the price.
- Calibration: windshield, camera and suspension work may need a calibration afterwards, which adds to the bill.

## Repairs that are often covered for free

Before paying for any Tesla repair, check whether it is covered. Tesla issues recalls and service campaigns, many of them as over-the-air software updates and some requiring a service visit. Recalls are free regardless of age or warranty status. Glass and impact damage is often covered by comprehensive insurance, and rear glass stress cracks on the Model 3 and Model Y are a common example.

Within the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, the Basic warranty covers most defects. Within 8 years, the Battery and Drive Unit warranty covers the pack and motors within its mileage cap. Details are in [Tesla out-of-warranty repairs](https://evfixguide.com/blog/tesla-out-of-warranty-repairs).

## Why Tesla Service costs more than an independent shop

Tesla Service usually replaces a complete assembly, such as a full door handle, a complete taillight or a new screen, because it is faster and fully warrantied. Independent shops are more likely to repair the failed component, such as a door handle gear, a taillight seal or an eMMC chip. That is the source of the 60–95% savings in the tables above.

Tesla Service has advantages too: genuine parts, the latest software procedures and warranty on its work. For safety systems and anything under warranty, Tesla is usually the right first call. ## How to lower Tesla repair costs

1. 1 · Check warranty and recalls first. Open the Tesla app or enter your VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup.
2. 2 · Record the alert codes from [Service Mode](https://evfixguide.com/blog/tesla-service-mode) before any visit; it shortens diagnosis.
3. 3 · Try the right reset first. Many electronic glitches clear with a [soft reset or power off](https://evfixguide.com/blog/tesla-reset-guide).
4. 4 · Do the DIY-friendly jobs yourself: filters, 12V batteries, wipers and trim clips.
5. 5 · Get an independent quote for anything over about $500. [Find an independent shop](https://evfixguide.com/#find-shop-section).
6. 6 · Check comprehensive insurance for glass and impact damage.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are Tesla repairs expensive?

Routine Tesla repairs are usually not expensive: most common fixes cost $100 to $2,500 at Tesla Service and less at independent shops. The expensive exceptions are the high-voltage battery ($12,000–$20,000 out of warranty), drive units ($3,000–$7,000) and Model S/X air suspension ($1,200–$2,500 per strut). The 8-year battery and drive unit warranty covers the biggest risks.

### Which Tesla model is cheapest to repair?

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are generally the cheapest to repair because they share many parts and are produced in large numbers. The Model S and Model X cost more, mainly due to air suspension, presenting door handles and older MCU1 computers. Cybertruck repair costs are still emerging, with many early issues handled by recalls.

### Is an independent shop cheaper than Tesla Service?

Usually, yes. For the common repairs in our guides, independent shops are typically 30–80% cheaper than Tesla Service because they repair the failed part rather than replacing a full assembly. Using an independent shop does not void a US Tesla warranty, though repairs under warranty should still go to Tesla.

### What is the most expensive Tesla repair?

The most expensive Tesla repair is a high-voltage battery pack replacement, typically $12,000 to $20,000 at Tesla Service out of warranty in 2026. A front or rear drive unit replacement is next at roughly $3,000 to $7,000. Both are covered by Tesla’s 8-year Battery and Drive Unit warranty within its mileage limits.
