## Can an independent shop fix it?

This is usually a phone setting or pairing issue the owner can fix. If key cards and phone keys all fail, Tesla Service can diagnose the car's key readers.

## How to fix it yourself (easy, 10 - 20 Minutes)

Check Bluetooth and app permissions, restart the phone, and delete and re-add the phone key from the car's Locks menu. You need a working key card to pair a new phone key.

### Tools you need

- Smartphone with the Tesla app
- A working key card (needed to authorize a new phone key)

### Steps

1. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the Tesla app is allowed to use Bluetooth, location, and background activity on your phone.
2. Turn off battery-saving modes that stop the Tesla app from running in the background.
3. Restart your phone and do a soft reboot of the car's touchscreen.
4. On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Locks, delete the phone key that is not working, and add it again from the app. Tap a key card on the reader when the car asks for it.
5. To use a key card, place or tap it on the card reader. On Model 3/Y this is on the center console behind the cup holders; other models use the reader location shown in the owner's manual.
6. If a key card is lost, remove it from the Locks list right away.

**Pro tip:** Always carry a key card as a backup in case your phone battery dies. Keeping the phone in a metal case or deep in a bag can weaken the Bluetooth signal.
