4 Tesla Fixes Owners Swear By (Most Cost $0)
By the EV Fix Guide team · · 3 min read
Some of the best Tesla fixes are not in any manual. They come from owners comparing notes on Reddit and Tesla Motors Club.
These four come up again and again. Each one either costs nothing or saves you a service visit.
In short
- Steering shake at 70 mph after a bump is often loose tire foam, not your tires.
- A dead 12V battery? The tow-eye cover hides wires that pop the frunk.
- Two habits stop the musty AC smell from coming back.
- Unplug within 5 minutes of a finished Supercharger session to avoid idle fees.
1. The $0 steering shake fix
A sudden steering wheel wobble around 70 mph, often right after hitting a pothole, is very often the factory acoustic foam strip coming loose inside the tire. It throws the wheel out of balance.
Any tire shop can dismount the tire and cut out the loose foam in about 15 minutes. No new tires needed. Full details in our steering vibration guide.
2. Open the frunk with a dead 12V battery
If the 12V battery dies, the car will not unlock and the frunk will not open, so you cannot reach the battery. The workaround: pop off the small round tow-eye cover on the front bumper.
Behind it are two wires, red and black. Connect them to a 9–12V external battery and the frunk pops open. Then jump the car from the posts inside. Step by step: frunk won’t open with a dead 12V.
3. Stop the musty AC smell for good
A sour or vinegar smell from the vents comes from moisture on the evaporator. Three habits keep it away:
- Turn off Recirculation and run fresh outside air when you can.
- Switch the AC cooling off two minutes before you arrive, so the fan dries the evaporator.
- Replace the cabin air filters every spring.
4. Avoid Supercharger idle fees
Tesla gives you a short grace period, typically about 5 minutes, after charging reaches your limit before idle fees begin. Unplug and move inside that window and you pay nothing extra. The app notifies you when charging is nearly done.
